Race report by Steve Suttle –

I ran in the British masters 50k championship at Mallory Park Motorcycle Racing Circuit on Saturday May 3rd.
I was accompanied by Mark Haddon to hand me my gels in the 10 lap event and give me moral support and encouragement, thank you Mark! He also drove the 190 miles back after which was a godsend!
The 3.3 mile lap included a substantial hill which had to be negotiated twice so 20 times in total.

It was more windy than forecast which was disappointing but it was the same for everyone as they say.
The event included the 100k championship as well. It is an annual event featuring the Celtic Plate, England verses Scotland, Wales and Ireland, so it has the best runners selected for this individual and team event.
A Scotsman ,Henry Hart won in an awesome 6.37.18 which is a world class time.
My race went as well as could be expected although it was an amazing experience being repeatedly lapped by these athletes running twice my distance!
The hills took their toll and on the last lap I had to summon up all my willpower not to walk. I was grateful to finish in 4.30.36 which won me the the gold medal in the V65 category. I have to be honest here and admit there were only 2 of us and I lapped him on my final lap! But, as they say you have to be in it to win it!
My Garmin tells me my average pace was 8.38 miling which I was happy with on that course. I am not tempted by the 100k!

Thanks for the report Steve. What a performance! Not only did you win the V65 age category Gold in the British Masters Championships but you also set a new Overall Mens 50k club record with this incredible performance.
